Pupils at Coleridge Community College were given a pre-Christmas treat when they were given a futsal masterclass session by former Manchester United and Cambridge United midfielder Luke Chadwick.

Chadwick took sessions with each form in Year 7, going through a number of drills and exercises to help them develop their futsal skills.

Played on a flat indoor pitch with hockey-sized goals and a smaller ball with a reduced bounce, futsal is one of the fastest growing indoor sports in the world. The five-a-side game allows up to nine substitutes, and is the only small-sided form of football recognised by Uefa and Fifa.

The sessions at Coleridge proved to be a big success, with Chadwick, who is involved with United’s men’s futsal team, proving to be an inspiration to the youngsters.

PE teachers Andy Palmer, who organised the event, said: “Futsal has been introduced into lessons over the last few years.

“Every student has the chance to work with one ball each, which really develops their skill level. This was a fantastic opportunity to create a link with the local community by introducing Ross Brooks (United futsal co-ordinator) to the students so they can take the game further.

“The fact Luke Chadwick delivered the sessions to the students was amazing, as they all know Luke and his playing career!”

Brooks added: “We’re delighted to have our Cambridge United men’s senior futsal team in the National League.

“With our futsal scholarship programme at Cambridge Regional College for 16 to 18 year olds, and our futsal development centres and futsal schools for 12-16 year olds, we’re looking to offer opportunities to young players to progress and develop into playing for the U’s in futsal.”
