The Solar girls’ team had won through the regional finals in convincing style and looked forward to the finals in Birmingham.
Their first game was against Painsley High School. After three minutes Solar scored, followed by another two before having a goal put past the keeper, the girls seamed to be in the right frame of mind, winning 3 – 1.
In the next game they played Frances Bardsley School, unfortunately the girls were in for a shock as they lost 1 – 2; our goal came from a run through the centre.
Our third game we came up against Flixton Girls School, unfortunately loosing 1 – 2. Our goal was an absolute screamer of a goal from our half straight into the goal through a group of players.
The final game of the league was against Kirk Balk Community College. The Solar girls took the game to them and won 2 – 0. Goals coming from a very long strong shot from inside our half and the second from a lovely run and finish in the top right hand corner.
We had now won two and lost two and had to wait for the results of other teams to see if we were travelling home now or playing in a semi final.
After a tense wait we were through and had everything to play. The Semi final was against Kingsdown School, we scored first with a ball slipped past the keeper and this relaxed the team, but then they scored. Shortly after a nice move saw the ball hit the net to finish the game 2 – 1.
So here we were in the Final by shear chance and a little good fortune. We started the game against a very strong Flixton Girls School team, the game was very close and they pressured but we countered and with three minutes to go Solar got the winner, every one was on edge, could we hold on? The girls played their hearts out to defend; then the whistle went the relief was unbelievable. They had won.
