Grimsby Futsal League Under 16 Futsal Cup Final

Grimsby Soccer Club 8 Dragons 6

GSC was hot favourites being on a long string of wins; Dragons’ by comparison was in a poor run of form not helped by injuries to key players.

After five minutes the game looked over as a contest, GSC had opened up a 3-0 lead and Dragons looked bewildered by the opposition slick movement and passing.

Remarkably Dragons clawed their way back into the game. 3-1 and signs of order within the Dragon team.

Three two and some of the early damage had been rectified, but GSC was still in match control with every player on top of their game and having played so many games together anticipating in advance colleagues next moves.

Half time GSC 7 Dragons 3

Dragons came out a reinvigorated team; clawing goals back to 7-4; 7-5; 7-6 and the unlikely looked possible. Mid way through the half GSC scored a critical goal that re-opened a two gaol gap that meant Dragons had to play, not just against GSC but chase the clock as well. GSC lifted their game again and was in control until Dragons scored with one minute on clock (2 goals the difference); Dragons had hope, another goal looked possible, but to no avail – the clock wins.

An excellent final that was accredit to the fast skilful play and tactical nous of both teams.

Dragons must take credit for turning round a complete lost cause and winning the second half if not the battle.

Game superbly managed by referee John Mawer.

Man of Match Peter Farrell (GSC)

GSC Scorers; P.Farrell 3, Adam Williamson 2, Kyle Hulse, Ryan Green, Brad Elliott.

Dragons’ scorers Keenan McGrath (3) and Reece Moody (2) CJ Peart 1

This team have been together since the League started at what was the U10 level, and have gone onto represent the Club at National Level at Sheffield, Nottingham and Birmingham in that time. They currently sit top of the local League and so far are undefeated.

Being a sceptic of the game all of those years back, I am now a 100 per cent behind the game, it learns the player’s great technique and close ball control whilst also bringing up their fitness levels with its fast pace, without the player’s realising it! Also the player’s enjoy the playing of the game which we have now done for the past six years and have had some fantastic game s over the period of time.

Chris Francis, manager GSC

This was another great and close game between these two teams, played without tetchiness that often accompanies games when teams play each other on a regular basis.

Great keeper performances from both sides

GSC took advantage of two minor lapses in concentration from Dragons to take the lead, all of the Dragons team put the effort in as per normal, hitting the post and crossbar, but it wouldn’t go in!

It was one of those evenings yet again, an enjoyable final to watch, great performance from Dragons who played on regardless of no extra subs due to illness, full credit to GSC on a sporting win

The game was once again superbly refereed by John Mawer once again, fair decisions for both teams, a great futsal game to remember
