There are more ways to win than by just winning……………………Kev Bryant

In simplistic terms sport is about winning and losing, or is it? If it is sport have an awful lot of losers. For me winning at football or futsal has to have a level of imagination, creativity, ingredients you can’t bottle, but excite the spectator.

This last game had the lot. A relatively new team to futsal vs. experienced opposition. A new team made up of a random group of players looking for something to do with their time with a coach prepared to give up his time to enable them to play.

Over past few weeks random group has steadily got better, their opposition has always been consistently good. This game things changed, new random team stormed into lead, they closed play down, the goal keeper started using the ball intelligently, they was no longer a random team, Great Coates was a team. They fought and played for each other, strode into a three goal lead, and then calamity, their strong opposition pulled game level, and that’s way it ended. 7-7.

The score was important to both teams but was also a learning process for both teams. One had to learn how to clutch a draw from jaws of defeat, the other to manage a game and close out a three goal lead.

Players’ streamed sweat at end of the game, they had exited watching spectators with great invention, and more than one goal that made you asks ‘just how he did that?’

Every player could walk away saying I did my best.

Confused? What I’m really saying is that sport is so much more than the result; it offers so many more positives.
