WHEN it comes to futsal, no one can stop Grimsby Town at the moment.

The club’s young five-a-side specialists are taking the sport by storm again this season, and will be aiming to complete the second part of a domestic treble on Wednesday.

They achieved part one at the end of last month by winning the Kinder+Sport Cup, the second time they have lifted the trophy after finishing as champions in 2014.

And they’ll be aiming to clinch the league title this week as they take on Sheffield Wednesday in their North East Division League One encounter.

The Mariners are unbeaten in the division, after winning ten and drawing one of their 11 games to hold a nine-point lead over nearest rivals Middlesbrough.

13796465And, with their B and C teams topping the tables in Leagues Two and Three and the D side still in with a shout of the League Four title, Town have dominated on all fronts this season.

The players are also working hard away from the action, with the club offering a scholarship as part of its futsal programme, Education Officer and Coach Mark Westerby feels his players are fully deserving of their rewards this season.

“What the players have done this year is a massive achievement,” Westerby told the Telegraph.

“And it’s not just down to the futsal, it’s the entire programme, it’s a scholarship and everything combined is what makes us achieve.

“We came back early after the summer, and that was the players’ decision because we weren’t as successful last year and the lads wanted to change that, so we worked hard and hit the ground running at the start of the season.

The club are looking for players who have played grassroots football or Futsal previously. Players don’t need to have played at an elite level previously, just previous football or Futsal experience is required.

The course is a fantastic opportunity to gain a BTEC Level 3 extended diploma in sport (3 A-Levels equivalent) while representing the most successful FLT Futsal team in the country and training full time in a professional development programme.

The next trial event is on Tuesday, April 19 from 7-8pm at Clee Fields Sports Hall, Ladysmith Road, and there is an open evening on Wednesday, April 27 from 6-7pm at Blundell Park. For more information regarding these two dates or questions about the course, contact Mark at mark@gtset.co.uk
