PROJECT IMPOSSIBLE?

imagesWeek after week Grimsby Swans get beaten, not small scores but big scores that need a calculator to total. Recently, and understandably, the team has considered quitting. That is where I come in, I have offered what I consider to be my great expertise and experience (others might call it talk and no substance) to assist the team. The lads have accepted my offer, will they improve?

GRIMSBY INTERMEDIATE LEAGUE

Grimsby Swans 1 Ivory Toast 14

Tough start, Ivory Toast are accomplished players, only the best local teams get near to beating them – so a tuff start.

No long term goal was set, a short term plan was agreed that the team do no more than to aim at making slow weekly improvements.

What gains did we make?  The team had a basic 5 players (1 player did not arrive), a 6th player would have been a great help as the team struggled, understandably, with fitness late on. Needs to be rectified next match. Players when asked kept great defensive shape – not seen previous weeks. ‘Matt’ who I suggested had watched some previous games from on the pitch was a different player when ‘asked to do more.’ A big bonus.

For most of the game Ivory Toast used a ‘flyer’ goal keeper, which added a different tactical dimension to the game, more teams should do this when they are chasing matches. Indirectly it showed Swans players another tactical dimension.

Yes we lost, but by a reduced score from previous encounters, with the added bonus of a goal scored.  Can we improve next game – watch this space.
