FC Grimsby 2 Middlesbrough 4    Half Time 0-0

The half time score tells its own story; it was not 0-0 because
defences were on top, it was 0-0 because the defences had been tested to their
limits and was equal to the severe task asked of them.

In one first half instance  ‘Boro counter attacked 2 on 1 from their own
half, under normal circumstances a strong goal possibility, within a blink of an
eye Grimsby had recovered to outnumber them 3 on 2; outstanding, and
illustrating the commitment needed to play futsal.

At the opposite end Paul Goodhand, Daniel Durosemo, and Adam
Cooper all had snatched chances, but credit to ‘Boro that the big chance never
came.

One Grimsby player lost 4 lbs weight during his on court
time of 30 minutes maximum.

An absorbing half for the neutrals but a mental test for
those involved.

The teams committed only 5 fouls inclusive in the first
period of 20 minutes of ‘stop clock’ time.

The second half continued in the same vein until on 25 minutes
Danny Hornigold scored with a rasping drive after a great double save from ‘Boro
keeper Kurt Holmes.  The Grimsby bench,
at this point, thought game had turned their way after opening the half with
some dominate play.

Grimsby player, Ben Mortlock, had other ideas; unfortunately
ex Nicol Magpies (3 times FA Futsal Cup Finalists) was playing for Middlesbrough!  On 30 minutes he set up an equaliser for
David Herbert; 34 and 36 minutes he finished off his teams set up play to take ‘Boro
3-1 from nowhere.

FC Grimsby had given themselves an uphill task that they did
not flinch from; Goodhand is flattened in the box and picks himself up to score
from the spot. 3-2

The drama continued and in the same 37th minute ‘Boro
went 4-2 through Ben Amos.  Another goal
created with the pass taking the GK out of the game.

As tiredness drew in a series of yellow cards spoiled what
was otherwise a very sporting contest; the foul count rose, each team on 5
could not afford a 6th and that ‘free’ shot at goal.  Grimsby drew the foul and had a free shot,
could they pull another goal back?  The ‘Boro
keeper choose to stand 5 meters from the kicker, within the rules, but not
often seen, a good choice as it happens, Danny Hornigold’s shot hitting his
legs and rebounding to safety.

Come back to Grimsby Ben, I am sure the Grimsby institute
can find a nice easy course away from those University studies in Middlesbrough.
