BRAZILIAN FUTSAL COACH JANIO CRUZ OPENS PLAYERS EYES TO FUTSAL TECHNIQUE & TACTICS

copy_of_easter_pics_with_janio_2.4.12_7.jpgFor three days we had the
pleasure of the company of Brazilian football and soccer coach Janio Cruz. Janio‘s
visit was to coach junior players aged from 6-16. I have known Janio personally for several
years, the Grimsby futsal team playing against him when he lived in Sheffield,
and he worked for Sheffield & Hallam County FA and played for Sheffield
Futsal Club.

I knew Janio was a shrewd
tactical coach from playing against Sheffield; his team was tactically more advanced
with or without the ball, every player new in advance what he had to do. At
corners and free kicks they would have set plays, all challenging to defend. What I had never seen was Janio coach
futsal. In simple terms his sessions
exceeded my expectation, my head is full of new information. From the texts and emails I received after
the sessions the players and parents hold Janio in same high esteem. At least two parent team managers want Janio
to coach their club teams when we can persuade him to return.

How has Janio amassed such knowledge,
first he was born and educated in San Paulo where football and life is one and
the same thing? Brazilian schools I
discovered only play futsal; Janio learned football from age 7 and played 11v11
on big pitches from that age. Unusual,
most often I read of famous Brazilian footballers that moved to the big game at
16. He travels watching FIFA World and European
Final futsal matches; he has an insatiable appetite for futsal knowledge. Add to all this a four year sports degree attained in his own
country and you have a person that is to be listened too and valued.

How hard are Brazilian’s prepared
to work to achieve their goal. Janio’s 16
year old cousin is about to start a ten day trail with Inter Milan. His parents
have employed for several years a personal football coach, nutritionist and
fitness coach!

Janio has downloaded onto my
computer a batch of futsal videos including one of a 15 year old futsal star
who name I will add later. He is now at AC Milan waiting to fill the boots of Wesley
Snyder, when he eventually transfers. Illustrating yet again futsal players make
great football players in the majority of cases, look at FIFA World Players of
the year and all recent winners was first futsal players.

The sessions, what did I
learn? That I was not include enough technical
work into my sessions, that Janio’s sessions was a higher intensity and that if
Janio had a team in a sports hall for one hour training they would leave
exhausted but probably would not have played a normal game with goals. A player
fault was never ignored, the correct foot had to be used always; receive on the
left play with the left foot, receive on the right use the right foot. Technical training, 50% each foot. Open play set plays, practice, practice and
practice again. Reads as not a lot of
fun then you read the parent and player comments and another picture emerges,
one that says ‘hey this guy knows his stuff, this guy has got it right.’

Facilities, Janio told me Brazil
has far more high quality indoor facilities, but, as could be seen on the
videos, their football pitches are rolled mud with sparse grass, ours are a luxury
by comparison. A parent asked how a
group of twenty young Brazil youngsters would compare ability wise similar
group of English players. Janio said
confirmed what we anticipated, the Brazil group would be better. He explained
the Brazilian group would practice more outside in the streets in the parks
(more touches of the ball), overall they would have access to more and better
facilities, and the weather, ‘if it’s sunny outside you want to go and play
outside.’

Very
educational and interesting few days, very impressed with what I saw. My son
Lewis really enjoyed sessions. The down side for me watching and listening was
how far our nation is behind. Janio was
cracking at what he did. Would put a lot of our coaches to shame. Would like to
see him here again.

Janio
was brilliant, no wonder Brazil win everything.
Made our coaches look flat footed and slow. My team players (u12) very impressed, best
hour coaching session ever experienced. Want him back for an extended team
coaching session.

SM on behalf son aged 13

30 years
of coaching and Janio has forced me to revaluate all my principles. Have watched many professional coaches work.
Janio is on par with best.
