GRIMSBY Town Sports and Education Trust Futsal side headed to Birmingham this week to compete in the soccer AM Cup, after qualifying before Christmas to reach the second round. The Mariners were drawn into group five which was labeled the group of death with us, Cardiff City, Exter City and Brighton and Hove Albion making up the group.

GrimsbyTown vs. Cardiff City
The game started with both team cautious of each other, Grimsby stuck to their shape and discipline and Cardiff finding no way to break the Town side down. Five minutes, Grimsby took the lead through a left foot strike from Tom Watters, shortly after Jack Blendell scored to make it two, then Connor Watson scored a well worked goal to make it 3. After half time Blendell scored his second to make it four, the game tightened up before Matty Perrin played in Oakley Luddington who slotted in the net with his first touch to make it five. From this point some short sharp passing from Grimsby opened Cardiff up for Tom Watters to run through and score the sixth and final goal of the game.
Grimsby Town vs. Exeter City
The game started well for the Mariners as they took the lead early on from a good finish from distance by Connor Watson. Town then added to their score line to make the score 2-0 midway through the 1st half from a good finish from Tom Watters, Grimsby grew in confidence and grabbed another through Watters adding his second of the game and making the game 3-0.  Exeter grabbed a goal back just after Grimsby scored and putting them back in the game. However Grimsby was in full stride now and seconds before half time a fourth goal made it 4-1 at half time and the game looked over for Exeter.
The second half saw Jack Burrows sent off. The mariners had to now wait two minutes before a replacement player could enter the court, Town had to defend a man down, Exeter now applying the pressure but struggled to create anything clear cut and the Mariners saw the game out to win 4-1.
Grimsby Town vs Brighton and Hove Albion
The first half was slow paced with both teams happy to sit back. While in possession both teams kept the and showed a patient approach. The Mariners did manage to break Brighton down before half time after a good cross from Watters left Watson with a tap in at the far post. Half time score 1-0. With Brighton needing points from this final game to qualify from the group stage the game opened up, Brighton started well and their early pressure paid off with a goal making it 1-1. The Mariners replied instantly with two quick goals from Perrin and Luddington. Brighton now playing with the fly goalkeeper pulled another back to make the score 3-2. Brighton now pushing for goals allowed Town to hit them on the counter and add a further two goals each from Watson and Luddington. The game finished 7-3 to the young Mariners.
Town after three wins out of three finished top of the group with nine points and qualification into the last 16 of the soccer AM cup. Town face Crystal Palace in the next round. To watch highlights of the Mariners trip watch Soccer AM this Saturday.

Thursday 11/12 League Notice

For the second week problems was caused by school gossip!!

If team cannot play, has a problem contact me, the league organiser, not your opponents or anyone else that will listen.

Last week 3 teams turned up for one game after I received a call that a team was not turning up – they did!

This week one team told me they was not playing a game because they could not get strongest team out, this was at YMCA 30 minutes to KO!

One player, S7 for want of naming him is playing for every team without a break. This abusing loan player rule; either you have a team or not.

I found another team using a year 9 player, a year 9 player can play year 9/10, defiantly not year 11/12.

Another team has lost points playing an overage player.

With 10 teams everyone has to do their bit to make the league work. That means all channels of communication must come through me as LEAGUE ORGANISER. If you want a specific KO time let me week before not day before; to change a KO 3 other teams are inconvenienced. I try always to have 2 weeks fixture’s posted to web, the second week with no times – so get in their early.

The positives, most teams organise brilliantly, playing to a standard that is a credit to both managers and their players.

Any problems

Kev Bryant Blog – Titans nominated FA Futsal Cup, another YMCA wonder goal, talking to Burnsy, Barca visit getting closer, ‘MP’ training with Sheffield FC; Wednesday League better than European Cup!

LFA has allowed me to nominate a County under sixteen team to represent the County in the FA National Junior Futsal Cup. Such is the standard of the league I shall be requesting that they accept 2Goals1Cup who took Titans’ to the wire. It needed a playoff match to separate to great teams. No promises but will ask.

Playing for YMCA Spartans keeper ‘Ryan’ was given a tight delicate back pass to deal with inches of his goal line; he quickly moved the ball out of his feet and chipped the opposing goal keeper. Ryan had a space the size of the ball to aim at and he hit it!

Radio Humberside got wind of our coach visit from Barcelona Futsal Club February 16th.  As a consequence I went into Grimsby office and did a live link with Burnsy.  Limited spaces left for junior u10 players 235704/07980286663.

League stalwart Matty Payne is back playing after a serious illness. Great to know your fit and well and pleased that you are linking with Grimsby England star Ben Mortlock at Sheffield FC futsal club.

John Drew reporting great games of futsal at Second Avenue senior league, more fun he says than watching UEFA matches on TV. Some compliment.

Both the Thursday (11/12) and Novartis (9/10) leagues growing in numbers allowing leagues to be split into two divisions, more enjoyable for lower table teams but demanding challenge for top end teams.

Thanks for your support.

ARE YOU MISSING OUT? The European Futsal Championships are currently being shown live on Sky TV. Watch this stunning Russian goal.

It took the match 7 minutes to burst into life, with Titans finishing a quick counter attack leaving the 2 Goals in owe. Shortly after, 2 Goals equalised and then took the lead with a brilliant passing goal, immaculately finished. The game entered half time at 2-1 to 2 Goals. As the second half resumed, Titans began to attack with real purpose but 2 Goals 1 Cup defence stood strong. Finally Titans got the break through, a quick free kick catching 2 Goals goalkeeper off guard. Titans then stepped up the gears and soon after took the lead. 2 Goals Never gave up though and although physically exhausted tried to build attacks of their own, chasing the game though they were always going to have to commit more and more men forward. This was the exact reason they conceded the fourth.
The winners on the night; Titans. The winner on the whole; Grimsby Futsal. The standard seems to improve season on season.

BM

Congratulations both teams for raising the Grimsby futsal crossbar to a new level. No praise can be to high.

Neymar and Hulk promote futsal benefits – courtesy UEFA

2041567_MEDIUMLANDSCAPEUEFA Futsal EURO 2014 starts tomorrow in Antwerp, and the interest goes beyond the continental borders of the competition. Brazil are the reigning world champions in the sport and many of their star footballers also played the sport when young. Two such are Hulk and Neymar, who learned some futsal skills from the sport’s most famed name, Falcão, and they speak to UEFA.com about the benefits of the discipline.

Neymar, FC Barcelona forward
Futsal helps a lot because you need to think quickly. It’s a more dynamic game and today in Europe there’s not much space so you need to think quicker and futsal has helped me a lot with that. Futsal is one of my passions. I always loved to play, but unfortunately I had to stop to progress on the football pitch.

Hulk, FC Zenit forward
I played some futsal when I was five or seven years old, I liked it a lot. Anyone who plays futsal a lot will end up showing what they have learned on the football pitch too. There are some tactical moves in futsal which are much more difficult to break out from, but when you have some experience in futsal it ends up being easier.

I think the fans love futsal because of the smaller pitch, you’re closer to goal although the goal is a bit smaller, but I think that it’s the number of goals that makes the fans enthusiastic.

Despite it being a pitch for ten players, four each side plus the goalkeepers on both teams, there is a lot of movement. You run a lot. You might not think so, but it’s like the movement we have during a football match, although I think there’s even a bit more movement in futsal than in football on a grass pitch.

[Playing futsal I learned] control of the ball, the way you dominate the ball. In futsal the ball always comes faster, it has more speed, and you have to have more agility to be able to immediately break out of a play or marking, so that helps a lot on the [football] pitch.
